One, Year
a time capsule
presents a chronological collection of artworks by Gizem Vural, Kara Rooney, Jaime Steiger, Chanette Manso and Treasure Frey that share a formalistically uncanny relationship with our new era that has been defined by Covid-19. Gizem Vural comes from Istanbul and lives in New York where she works as a graphic artist for publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times and Bloomberg Markets. In 2019 Vural stepped away from her editorial work and made a new series of paintings and prints that culminated in a solo exhibition titled Talking Lines that took place in December 2019. One month after the lockdown, Kara Rooney was living in Mexico and created Contagion Drawings in an effort to assist with improving the living conditions of Mexican migrants within border communities. In the Summer of 2020, Chanette Manso refined the video footage of a drone light painting titled Orange Splat that was created on the roof of a building in Brooklyn, featured in an online solo exhibition titled Gardenscapes. While working in isolation within an empty studio building, Jaime Steiger began exploring the abstract genre and presented a new series of paintings in November 2020 titled Portrait of the Self . With a minimal use of colors, Steiger revealed the depth of paint in the face of ambiguity. Treasure Frey broke away from her usual abstract work and revealed the pathos that characterized much 2020. One, Year reflects the unpredictable nature of this new zeitgeist.
