September 24 - November 15, 2020
lightens the impact from the Quarantine of 2020 by taking viewers outdoors on a journey through the grand, airy sunsets of New York City. Utilizing a systematic, meditative process, Manso walks across a rooftop, drawing luminescent lines of varying colors in space to create calming environments of poppy fields, bamboo gardens, desert landscapes, a vegetable garden and a pond that is full of white water lilies.
Through this presentation of 14 photographs and 4 videos, Chanette Manso infuses an impression of bucolic into the heart of New York’s oasis. The images seen and experienced throughout Gardenscapes are available in limited editions and are part of a larger, ongoing series titled Lightscapes that present Manso’s light paintings set within the context of seashores and cityscapes. Especially now, she likes to create images from mega-landscape performances that she directs with participants.
Manso has been light painting for 30 years and has shown her art at the Palais de Tokyo (1993), Espace Pierre Cardin (2013), and UNESCO-Paris (2015, 2018). Most recently, Manso’s art has appeared in group exhibitions at the Solas Gallery and Creative Tech Week in New York. In 2019 a solo exhibition titled New York Prints and Augmented Reality App took place at Bushwick Open Studios in Brooklyn, New York. Manso’s 2018 solo show titled Velvet Warriors that honored a selection of heroes and heroines, was published as a book in 2020.
